limbaugh of davis. he was arrested in september of last year for battery. he was on a bicycle when he ambushed the rookie police officer. police don't know the motive for the attack. members of the east bay community are in shock after a deadly crash involving teenagers. two teenagers dead, four others injured. everyone in the car between the ages of 13 and 17. they may have attended a high school basketball game. speeding on a wet road is likely to blame. people stopped to leave flowers andrhoinjuries. one by one, hundreds of teachers and familiesere needs for their classrooms. at the core of the problem, they say, is more public education funding. the education association says they are trying to reach a deal on a contract to avoid a strike. teachers tell us, with a new governor, they hope funds reach

the classrooms fast. the 22nd day of the shutdown. president trump released a video urging democrats to rise above partisan politics. >> my administration presented congress with a detailed proposal to secure the border and stop the criminal gangs, drug smugglers and human traffickers. democrats in congress refused to acknowledge the crisis. hopefully, we can rise above support national security. >> the president urged people to call democrats and demand they support funding a wall. a democrat with bay area ties announced a bid for the white house in 2020. 44-year-old julian castro served as secretary of housing under president obama. he was the mayor of san antonio for five years and attended stanford. he announced he is running for

president today in san antonio. castro is the grandson of a mexican immigrant. if elected, would be the first hispanic president. new video of a home in gordon, wisconsin. this is where 13-year-old jaime closs was held captive for nearly three months. the 21-year-old shot and killed jaymi's parents. a woman was out walking her dog when she approached and said she needed help. the sheriff says patterson's goal was to kidnap jaime. the family didhim. jaymi h crews werepoing to a gas leak when the building suddenly paris. exploded. you can see the video of it. the bakery is in a busy tourist area. a spanish tourist was killed.

three dozen people were injured. french interior minister says the firefighters were killed trying to save the lives of their colleagues. one witness says he was lucky to escape with only a few injuries. >> nothing. i heard the explosion, then a lot of pressure came out. a lot of black smoke and glass. my st had time to get down and head. >> that explosion, believed to be the result of a gas leak. still ahead on nbc bay area news at 5:00, how a group of local dog owners are coming together to fight the government shutdown. the action they are taking to save a popular beach. we'll be right back. many of us r

that long. >> people in the bay area continue to find ways to help out. >> volunteers opened a dog trail in san francisco. we have that story. >> reporter: delighted dog owners were out in force today. the popular victim to e shutdown. >> it became an unsafe situation. the people parked on the shoulder. cars go really fast on skyline. we were concerned about the safety here. >> reporter: the dog owner's group approached with a plan. if we pay you to keep the crash picked up, can it be reopened? >> the officials agreed. they will pay for the routine maintenance. it will cost 1500 a week. for now, they will fund at least a month. >> we want to ensure people can

enjoy it end not fair to not be work. people around the country been stepping up. where he saw this as our chance to step up and help out. looked like a nice day out there. that's not going to last. >> up in the sierra was a nice day, if you like a certain type of weather. >> the numbers compared to this time last year is amazing. when you look at the averages statewide, the snow on the 3rd was 67%. now it's 90%. 89-90 to the south. why it's significant is this time last year, i was 20-28%. so far, things are looking good. odds are, when you see the extended forecast, close to average by 7-10 days.

gorgeous night. easy travel to the sierra. head we have temperatures right now toward the 61. in the 50s. but at least not umbrella weather. storm ranger getting the evening off. the rain is to the south around santa barbara. the clouds to the west, though, it adds changes tomorrow evening. tomorrow, patchy fog. as we head into the afternoon, highs tomorrow cooler. we will see increasing clouds, also increasing wind picking up out of the south as we see a storm system develop. it will bring rain chances late in the day. the morning doesn't look that bad. partly cloudy skies. 6:00, the rain. notice, it's coming up from the south.

santa cruz mountains may see moai and late in the day and into monday then a few breaks of sunshine afternoon. the end of the weekend rainfall totals between now and 11:00 doesn't look like a lot. not a big impact here. by sunday night into monday morning, the rain total comes up. more of a monday morning commute. a commute impact as some areas are picking up rain. the south bay is seeing the most out of the monday storm. tuesday, the surface low is why it's going to turn gusty on tuesday. high winds possible. showers, a break between storms wednesday and thursday, likely the strongest storm in terms of rainfall and gusty wind. be ready for that, especially if you are in the north bay. the santa cruz mountains, as we add up the totals, the purple and white there. more than four to five inches of rain. run-off issues possible in the

north bay and the santa cruz mountains. friday, showers following the storm. next weekend, the storm is passing by more to the north. that's important because the kingicki up nextndaynto monday . it can enhance the risk of it and coastal flooding. we have to watch out for that as the storms are, for the most part, moving to the north. what a week ahead, wind, high surf, heavy rain totals. tuesday and thursday are the big days. more for next weekends. like you were saying earlier, january. it is very januaryesque. >> thanks a lot. all wook long we have been showing you the latest innovations at the consumer show. >> one more story for you, this one taking place outside that
